THE STORY
"Female Warrior" is a powerful tribute to the often-overlooked Japanese female warriors, with a particular focus on the legendary Tomoe Gozen. Renowned as a prototypical female samurai, Tomoe Gozen’s legacy is one of courage, beauty, and unparalleled skill. Described as having “long black hair, a fair complexion, and a face of striking beauty,” she was more than a formidable presence—she was a warrior of extraordinary prowess. Fearless on horseback, undeterred by the fiercest terrain, and a master of both sword and bow, she was said to be "a match for 1,000 warriors, fit to face either god or devil." Her story, though brief, is immortalised in the Heike Monogatari, the 13th-century epic chronicling the Genpei War—a pivotal clash between the Taira and Minamoto clans in 12th-century Japan. Through this artwork, I aim to honour Tomoe Gozen and the forgotten heroines like her, ensuring their bravery and spirit are remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
